She knew the vulnerability of my heart and my secrets that made me, me. Even as I type this I find it so difficult to talk about her in past tense.

I must say that I always thought losing a loved one would challenge my faith--push me to a place where I just didn't understand. I, however, feel completely opposite. In fact, knowing that Memaw has gone to heaven to be with Jesus Christ gives me the motivation and desire to live a life full of Christ so that I might be reunited with her again. I will miss her everyday for the rest of my life. I find myself telling stories about her or doing things in the kitchen and wanting to call her and tell her about it. That's when it hurts a little more.

I found myself buried with devastation on Christmas Eve, wondering how I would enjoy the holidays without my Memaw. I wanted this to be special because it would be our first Christmas with Jackson. That evening I was going through my address book and out slipped a note. I had no idea what it was, but discovered it was a note from Memaw. It was exactly what I needed to hear in my time of hurting. I won't retype it all for this blog, but here's what part of it read:
"We will think of you Ashley where ever you are Christmas. Out of sight is not out of mind. Always know you are very special to your Memaw and Pawpaw. Have a wonderful Christmas and the best New Year you have ever had. We love you-Memaw and Pawpaw xxooox."

I have hundreds of notes just like these. I keep them all in a special place. It was amazing that this note just so happened to find me when I needed it. We did have a beautiful Christmas and New Years with our precious Jackson-the best one I have ever had.

Some Updated Pics!

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I discovered that I spread myself WAY to thin this fall taking on staying at home, working my Southern Living at Home business, and going to graduate school. Things are winding down for the holidays, and I finally feel like I have a handle on things again. School finished up well for me. I am pleased with my grades. I have decided that I will not be taking any classes this spring. To be fair to Jackson, David, and myself this is truly the best decision. My business is doing well, and I hope to keep the momentum going. I was able to have members join my team and have several great parties. I even earned a free trip to Las Vegas! I will be going this January. As for being at home, I think I have a gaumet (spelling?) of emotions.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I love seeing Jackson grow up every day and feel like I am playing a major part in the person he is becoming. He is so full of innocence and eager to learn new things. I hate it. I hate being trapped in the house on rainy, cold days wondering what all of my friends are doing. I hate it when people say, "oh" in that pity-strained tone when they discover I am "just a" stay at home mom. I laugh at it. I laugh when there are moments I am juggling too many things at once. I laugh when I eat it and only Jackson sees me fall on my face. I am in awe of it. I am in awe of how I got through some of these days. Let's face it, a crying baby in pain from teething is just no fun. I am in awe of the beautiful blessing I get to hold, tickle, cuddle, and kiss all day long.

Race for the Cure

For the last several years I have participated in the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure event. It is a wonderful race bringing awareness to breast cancer and prevention. I am super exicted that I am going to be doing the race again this year. The Race for the Cure will be held on Saturday October 3rd. I would love to have all of you join me (don't worry, I walk)! You are more than welcome to join me in the fight agaist breast cancer by making a pledge. The contribution is tax-deductible and helps to fund local outreach, awareness, and treatment programs.

Donations like these are what helped to locate and treat a mass found in myself back in 2005. Now, I feel honored that I can participate in this race; I will walk for my mother and friend this year.

The Blues Brothers...kind of...

As many of you know I have very blue eyes...which basically means that my eyes are extremely sensitive to sunlight. Per Erin's suggestion, I read the novel, The Time Traveler's Wife. So, we went to see the movie while the guys stayed at home and watched the kids. I haven't been to the movies in probably 3 years (David and I just wait for things to come out on video because its cheaper and there are less distractions). The girl time was refreshing; Erin and Dana are so much fun and easy to talk with. The movie was okay, I didn't LOVE it, but it was enjoyable. So why blog about it? Well, I wanted to note some comments about the movies:

1) My favorite part of the movies are the Previews. Why? Number one, a movie is a 50/50 risk of enjoyment, but the previews are guaranteed satisfaction. Number two, I feel like I am "sneaking a peak" at something that isn't out yet. It's like being a kid waiting for Santa.

2) People should have to walk through "cell phone on" detectors. Seriously, what part of the "Please silence cell phones" warning didn't the lady next to me understand?!

3) Manners are under-rated. Rule of thumb: Chew with your mouth closed people, especially with popcorn...it's loud enough!

4) I was totally distracted, wondering what was so important that the lady next to me kept texting the entire movie? It wouldn't have bothered me if her phone wouldn't have kept lighting up every few sections and vibrating my cup holder.

5) Wow! Those were some seriously comfortable chairs! When did going to the movies get so comfy? It may have been exhaustion, but I just wanted to melt myself deeper into those things!

Sitting and Playing

Bump! Sitting unassisted might be fun, but the bumps on the head aren't fun when that wobbly body goes crashing! I am a super-proud mommy as I watch Jackson sit and play on his own. But, I feel terrible when he goes crashing down. I want to catch him every time, but also want Jackson to learn to try to "catch" himself by using his muscles to stop himself from going down. Solution: pillows. The Boppy one is great. He can crash with comfort. It is sweet to watch him discover the world around him sitting up. Plus, I can now play across from him and watch those innocent reactions to toys and sounds.

Drool...

Jackson has had lots and lots of drooling here lately. Could he be teething? Surely not. I will admit that everythin goes to the mouth: hands, socks, washclothes, toys, and even other people's fingers. But, I don't see any inflammation on his gums. Elizabeth and I met back in 2005 when I first began my career as an educator. She helped to mold and make me the teacher I am today, although she absoulutely denies any credit. (Liz is way too humble). Girl time is great! We just giggled, laughed, snacked, and told secrets. It was like being a kid again at a slumber party...only our conversations were less about playing Barbie and more about what is up with men wanting Barbie's. ha ha When she left I felt a void, but know that I will see her again soon. Jackson really enjoyed time with his Aunt Liz as well. We shared her!

Big Decision

Today's post is a very personal one. Let me start by saying this was the 2nd hardest decision that I have ever made in my life. We've prayed, gotten frustrated, analyzed, and sobbed together. In the end, I know that I am doing they right thing because of the peace I feel in my heart. Peace like this only comes from the Lord.

Over the last 4 months, I have fallen in love with a precious little boy and the job of being his mother. Not every day has been wonderful. In fact, I might be so bold to say that many of my days have been tough. So, why do this? Have you ever dreamt of something? Have you ever made your dreams come true? Mine did. My dreams came true on: May 14th, 2005, June 25th, 2005 and March 26th, 2009. I graduated college, married my soulmate, and welcomed my son on these three days. Since I was a little girl, these were my dreams. I remember telling people that I would do these things and in that order...I'd describe how I would go to college, start a career, get married, buy a house, have children, get a masters degree, and love happily ever ever. I am living my dream. God has given me my dreams.

So, my big decision was which do I sacrifice for the other? Knowing myself, I cannot be a good wife, dedicated educator, doting Mommy, and full time graduate student at the same time. I honestly didn't want to let any of my dreams go...afterall, I've labored so hard for each. I decided to be a wife, mother, and full time graduate student. I feel excited and defeated at the same time. Why defeated? I don't quit; and, I feel like I am quitting my 3rd grade team and school. I know that my position can be easily filled...but, it is my position. I know that another educator will teach, but I hope he or she loves those little boys and girls they way I have the last four years. I will be back, though. I am so excited to pick up my masters program and pursue my degree in Counseling. I feel that I can begin to touch lives in another way.

Please remember me in your prayers as I learn to let go of one opportunity for another.

Brothers

I really enjoy laid back days in the yard mowing, weeding, planting, watering, and grilling. Today was just one of those kind of days. It was precious to watch Jackson "talk" to his brothers, our other 4-legged boys, Sully and Hunter. Since it was close to his bed and bath time, I decided to let the boys get as close to Jackson as they wanted and vice versa. Jackson cooed and pulled on the boys and they gave him a doggy-bath of their own. It was great! David and I laughed about seeing Jackson running or riding around with the boys in the future. We're so glad that they tolerate him now. Jackson especially loved it when Hunter would bark. We've trained Hunter to "speak" with a command, so it was easy to get a reaction from Jackson. I am not sure what it was about the situation that gave me this warm, maternal feeling. I adopted Sully in 2002 when I was in college, and we got Hunter in 2005. Now Jackson is here and it all seems to just fit. I love ALL of my boys (including Daddy)!

By the end of the afternoon poor Jackson was completely worn out.

P.S. As a Mom, I know they're the right thing to do...as a Mom, they're the hardest thing to do. I hated sitting there and having that helpless feeling as the needles made Jackson cry today. I, personally, don't mind needles (perhaps because I've had so many). But, I do know that certain medicines in the vaccination must burn. Poor guy. On another note, our official weigh-in today was 12 lbs 7 1/4 oz. He was also 23 3/4 inches long. He's growing! Our doctor felt like everything looked great, and was very pleased that Jackson is doing all the necessary milestones, plus a few extra. We're so proud of our little guy!

4 Months Old

Jackson is officially 4 months old today! He is scheduled to go and get his shots on Wednesday. People say it goes by fast. I wouldn't say fast, but it is definitely surreal to think that exactly four months ago today I was welcoming my little boy into our lives. He has been all smiles today. He just loves to giggle and coo. He sits and "talks" to others across the room. He is interacting so much more with the world around him. Jackson has also developed his own little personality. For example, when he wants to be heard, he can screech as loud as a horn honking. When he is irritated, he lets you know. He is a beautiful boy, and I just keep thanking God that I get to be his mother.

On another note, we've been taking these monthly pictures. Well, we got ready for bed and realized that we didn't take our shot today. So, I made David dress him back into an outfit and snap a few shots. He has always LOVED the bathtub and has recently begun splashing and kicking and screeching with excitement while bathing. So, we figured we'd get the same reaction with the pool. Not so much. In fact, we didn't really get anything, initially. (Imagine hearing the sound of a balloon deflating.)

We figured that he was probably wondering why he was floating around on a giant yellow thing with a diaper, swimsuit, and T-shirt on. Oh, and not to mention the giant water hat Mommy put on him! He just floated there like a bump-on-a-log. ha ha Poor guy. Since we live in Texas I am planning on some more enjoyment closer to September. My Aunt Connie (visiting from Virginia) was able to talk to him and get him excited enough for a few photo opportunities. I cannot complian overall. However, we didn't receive many shoes and my mom bought the cutest pair of flip-flops. One catch...they are all too big! So, we went today and bought Jackson his very 1st pair of shoes. (Confession: I actually bought two pairs because I couldn't decide between the cute tennis shoes and the practical brown Stride Rite's that will go with all his church attire and jeans.) When we showed up at Uncle Jason and Aunt Shannon's house with our shoes on, David cracked up!
He just stared and stared at his feet all day long. Jackson was awesome! He enjoyed getting to see lots and lots of family and friends. He even went to his first fish fry and survived the terrible July heat. My sisters' 25th birthday was also on the 4th. (we're gonna celebrate next weekend with my mom) Amy decided to join us at the lake, however, to work on her tan. It was so amazing to spend some time in the sun with her. (David took Jackson-duty for awhile).

Traditionally we stay up late and watch the fireworks show over the lake. It is beautiful. However, this year we decided that a game of cards and an early night would suffice. Taking the time-out to just play cards, munch on goodies, and joke with family is refreshing. You don't realize how much you miss someone until you spend that much time with them. I am such a gushing, proud big sister. Oh, and my mom bought Jackson the cutest outfit for the 4th. Can you see the hat? It says, "Little Firecracker." Toooo cute!

Beep Beep!

Okay, so it's a no brainer that I love being a mom! But, I have also discovered some other hidden talents about myself. I apparently can make 1st birthday cakes that look like cars! My nephew's 1st birthday was today and we went down to south houston where they live. He loves cars, so it was necessary to have the cake look like one. I cut and pieced together his cake. The drive down there is over an hour, and we just kept thinking the whole way, "Lord, please don't let the bumper fall off!" LOL

The birthday party was sweet. My mom went with us, too. (Update on mom: She is feeling much better, and has begun to walk without her walker. She is still receiving treatment at home with nurses, but feeling more like "herself" every day) It was fun time, but I won't be going into the cake business any time soon. I've attached some pics of the event; there is a before and an after of the cake.

On another note, little Jackson began to "laugh" today when I tickled him. It sent my heart racing when I heard those little laughs. I am pleased to announce that he is growing and learning so much. In the last month Jackson has learned to travel long distances, sleep through the night, suck his fingers, sit-up with assistance, push himself up, soothe himself to sleep, smile, coo and grab things. I am sure I am missing a lot more, but these are some of things that I clearly remember.

When David comes home every day from work, he repeatedly says, "Wow, he has grown so much and changed." Honestly, I don't see it because I am with him every day. Even more honestly, my fear is that when I begin working this fall I will "see" what David sees. This scares me. Being home with Jackson this summer has been amazing; I know that I am the luckiest mom to have this time. But, going back to work will also give Jackson all of the wonderful things I have envisioned for his future.

4 Years and Counting

We celebrated our 4 year anniversary today. Four years of marriage...wow...that's progress. We met 7 years ago in College Station. Apparently David had been "stalking" me outside his apartment window by the pool for a few weeks and called in reinforcements to help with the meeting of my sister and I (he called for his brother and a couple of buds to come over). Funny thing is, David's brother actually started talking with me and making his move...in the middle of our conversation I said, "Hey, who's that guy over there?" pointing directly to David. He sheepishly answered, "Oh, that's my brother, David." A few weeks later we went to dinner at Cheddar's where I ate like a pig (hey, I was a starving college student). David has later told me that he knew I was his kind of lady when I could put down that much food...lol.

So, it was in true David fashion that he surprised me with dinner at Cheddar's this year. Only this time we had our precious addition. It is amazing how our lives have come together.

Daddy's Day

Father's Day was very special and laid back. We originally woke up early to go to church, but decided to go for another "quiet" day with just the three of us. Daddy received some shirts, an "I Love my Daddy" frame, and some IPOD equipment and song updates. It was a special day just for him.

Personally, father's day has been quite depressing the last 10 years because of my family situation. However, having a son has changed the day dramatically. I loved sitting and watching Jackson play with David. He grabbed his fingers and smiled and "cooed" at him. Tears filled my eyes as I watched the two of them interact. It reaffirmed the decision I made 4 years ago when I gave my whole heart to David, trusting that he would be a good husband and father. Today I also thought about God and how exciting it will be for me to sit in His lap one day as His child and listen to him tell stories like we do with Jackson.

Bye-Bye-Daddy

Jackson and I visited David at work today to surprise him with cookies and say goodbye to him. He is traveling out of town for three nights to Corpus Christi. Jackson behaved really well during the visit and loved all of the coo's and smiles he received from all the women at the office. Actually, about 20 or so women were in the middle of a meeting, but instructed David to bring Jackson by; so we knocked on the conference door. As if rehearsed, all of the women said, "ahhh..." about the same time. Well, being the little ham he is, Jackson lit up and gave the ladies a huge, toothless grin. Okay, so here goes mine:

1) You cannot ride the 4-wheeler with a baby.

2) You cannot float in the lake with a baby.

3) You cannot go down to the doc with a baby.

4) You cannot go fishing with a baby.

5) You cannot simply sit around outside with a baby (too many mosquitoes).

6) You cannot "run to house real quick" with a baby.

7) You cannot drink with a baby.

8) You cannot visit other houses for long periods of time with a baby.

9) You cannot apply sunscreen and then hold your baby.

10) You cannot get a tan with a baby.

It was a nice get-a-way, but I think going to the lake will be more fun once Jackson is older and can swim and play with us.

Jackson and the Vance Family

We traveled to Frisco and then to Paris, Texas over the last three days. My Uncle Kim passed and we went to his memorial and then to his burial. It was a beautiful service and it was amazing to see how he touched the lives of others by simply being a man of God. He was a terrific uncle and will always be remembered for that. While we were there Jackson was able to meet all my side of the family (The Vance's) for the first time. He was perfect, and I mean perfect. He slept most of the time, but woke up just enough to smile.

Jackson also got to meet my two hero's: Memaw and Pawpaw. Although things have changed greatly, it was so special for them to get to meet my son. It brings tears to my eyes to talk about it now. They have always been a driving force in my life. I admire so many things about them. Memaw laughed and told stories about how I have always wanted to be a mommy and how I deserved a special little boy. I got just that and I am so glad that they were able to hold and love on him.

The entire trip was emotional. From the purpose, to the family, to talks, to laughs. Jackson, David, and I even learned to travel in hotels together! I love my roots, and hope that Jackson will one day look back and be able to say the same.

Giggles and Coo's

We had some plain 'ol family time and fun today. Let me begin by stating that I absolutely enjoy my job. I love what I do. Not many people can wake up every day and say that they truly enjoy going to work and look forward to what the day will bring. I know that I am lucky because of that. However, this will be my 5th year of teaching (4th year at the same campus) and I find myself packing up everything (and I mean everything) for the summer.

It is truly exhausting. Do all campuses require teachers to move classrooms every year? Must all teachers pack up all of their belongings? Every summer I pay for a storage unit to put all of my tubs, books, games, chart paper, etc... I guess it just becomes tedious and somewhat useless. I long for the day when I get to be in the same classroom for more than one year. I don't think I would know what to do with myself. Oh, and having Jackson there every night while packing and loading wasn't exactly fair on him either. He was such a trooper!

Mommy & Me

It has been just Jackson and I for the weekend; David went to Matagorda Bay for some fishing. Jackson did wonderfully and even slept a little longer than normal. He had fun being outside at the Harbor and put up with the intense heat. He is such a kind and peaceful baby. He is smiling, grabbing, rolling, cooing, and holding his own weight on his legs. He received his shots and didn't like them, but who does?

Just the Two of Us!

David and I finally took our first date away from Jackson. Gregg and Erin graciously offered to watch Jackson while David and I went to our friends' Adam and Lindsay's wedding. It was a wonderful occasion and a great excuse to get all dressed up again. Jackson has discovered his fingers and wants to do nothing but slobber and put them in his mouth. Why be worried? Well, sigh, here it goes: I actually sucked my thumb until I was about 8 years old and I fear that little Jackson may fall into the same habit. It's sweet to watch him and refreshing to see him soothe himself, but I am pretty nervous he'll end up like me. It was a terrible habit to break. I have tried to "exchange" a pacifier for those fingers and he'll have nothing to do with it. We have this great one that monitors movement of the baby with an alarm and picks up the softest of sounds. This is a blessing because Jackson doesn't really cry to let you know he's awake or hungry. He simply lies there softly grunting. Also the monitor has to be turned off immediately when he's picked up or the alarm goes off (no movement). This saves us from embarassing conversations being overheard by anyone on the other end of the sound frequency. :) Doesn't he look tiny in such a big bed?

Mother's Day & Baby Bible Day

Happy Mother's Day to me! Since I am an official member of the Mommy Club I finally get a holiday. Pretty cool! Today we went to church and Jackson had a special tribute as well. At our church, West Houston Church of Christ, they celebrate the birth of children by presenting them with their very own Bible. This is a symbol that we will raise him in a Christian home with the Word of God. We also wrote him a letter that he will get to read one day.

We celebrated mother's day throughout the weekend by visiting my mom and Grama and also by having David's mother join us at church. Today Erin and her daughter Liz came over. Liz is 6 months old and it is amazing to see the difference between she and Jackson. They will actually be in the same Kindergarten class but the developmental differences now are huge. She was so sweet with Jackson and even tickled his toes while he chilled in his bouncy seat and stared and grunted at her. I made small pizzas for Erin and I while we talked about the Twilight series. *This is a whole other blog entry, but Erin got me hooked and I am seriously addicted. I read the books outloud to Jackson while we take our strolls in the neighborhood.* Okay, where was I...oh yes...playdates. I totally get why moms do them-for themselves of course! We need some time to talk in non baby talk mode. For the last 4 years David and I have celebrated our marriage and life together with a traditional Thursday night date. It ranges from dinner out to a game night or rental movie in. We have done this in order to always have some noninterrupted time together to reflect on our week, our worries, our stresses, our concerns, our fears, and sometimes just to beat the other at a game of Monopoly. :)

Since Jackson was born date night has gone aside, and boy can we tell. It has really made a difference in our marriage. But I am proud to annonce that Date Night is Back! Tonight David, Jackson, and I all went to Shoguns for a nice dinner. It was last minute, so it was kind of late. This worked out wonderfully, however, because we didn't have to wait to be seated and there weren't lots of crowds. Jackson slept through most of the dinner (except for when the chef made flames on the grill...he woke up to see that). It was a nice dinner and I look forward to many more.

Visiting Nemo and Grama

For several weeks now Jackson and I have been going to see my mother, Nemo, and my grandmother, Grama. David and I feel it is important for him to know her, and since she has been unable to drive for months we go see her. As many of you know, my mom has been very very ill and unable to leave her home because she can no longer walk without assistance or a wheelchair. We feel blessed that mom is finally home and no longer in hospitals. (She's been in and out of hospitals since Thanksgiving). We wish her progress was better after all the surgeries and procedures mom has gone through. The problems go from her head/neck all the way to her feet, literally. However, we are praying God will heal mom and give her lots more time with us to create more memories. In the meantime, my Grama has moved here from Virginia to care for mom. What a saint. I pray that I will not ever have to do the same for my son. I can only imagine the hurt and concern she must feel to watch her daughter suffer.

One last thing...Nemo. 5 years ago when my neice, Ema, was born my mom decided she wanted to be called Memaw because of my grandmother (Vance side). Well, Ema could never quite say Memaw and "Nemo" is what came out. We tried to correct her for years but she was pretty adiment. So, Nemo it was. My mom has this ongoing joke about her name. She says, "Well at least it's better than Shamoo (the whale)."

Good Night's Rest

So there is nothing like a good night's rest. Jackson is now 5 weeks old and has officially gone 5 hours between his feeding times through the night. Can I get an "oh yeah!" Now, if I could just convice my brain to quit waking up every two hours in the middle of the night! Soon, he will move to his own room and I won't hear him squirm. I think that will help with me sleeping and not que my body to pop out of bed to nurse.

I was sitting here thinking of what it used to be like to go to bed around 11pm and sleep in until 9am the next morning. Ahhh...the longing for those days. And, what did I do with all of the spare time I had around the house? I can answer that with a short list of things that barely get done now: dusting baseboards, cleaning ceiling fans, scrapbooking, pulling weeds, cooking gourmet meals (can we say spaghetti now), and shaving my legs. he he Oh well, I don't think I'd trade a thing in the world for the precious moments I share with Jackson. All in all it's worth it!

Sick as a Dog

Okay, I experienced what seemed to be death this last couple of days....one word...Mastitis. Ladies, if you've ever had it I know you're groaning now. Men, imagine being kicked repeatedly in your most tender of places. Exactly. I thought I was done with everything...nursing, mommy'ing, living, etc. The pain was worse than labor itself.

So, apparently I have been battling mastitis for over a month, but have been able to "work out" the masses with the use of warm compresses and massage. This time the fever came on in about 2 hours and I was shaking uncontrollably. I literally had to put Jackson down and call for Erin. David was on his way, but there was no way I could make it another 30 minutes. Did I mention that Erin is my angel? She literally looked like she had wings when she came through my front door.

We made it to the doctor and I apparently had a really bad case. It took several days for "everything" to work out. Gross. In the interim, Jackson had his 1st babysitter (Erin and Gregg) and learned to take a bottle. Grammy came to help David while I rested in bed on some serious antibiotics and pain killers. Did I mention ouch yet? I am going to be taking these antibiotics for two weeks. Here's to a speedy recovery!

Thumbs Up!

Jackson found his thumb today. Wow, time flies. I am still learning to balance being a mommy, wife, and Godly woman, but I feel that in time things will begin to get easier. I am awestruck with the beauty of motherhood, and the exciting things Jackson does daily. He is the biggest blessing in my life other than David.

We didn't do anything special today, other than simply love on Jackson and take in the beauty of the day. Jackson finally got tto meet his Memaw and Peepaw Templeton today. We were unable to meet sooner because they have both been in and out of the hospital. However, it was great getting to finally spend some time. Family is one of the most important components of your childhood. I firmly believe that. I grew up with summers, vacations, and all holiday in my Memaw and Pawpaw's house. They are some of the best memories of my childhood. We were so busy this weekend!! (Okay understatement) Aunt Amy (my sister) drove in to visit Jackson and my mom in the hospital. So, she got to really enjoy some time with him as well as some sister time with me. Also, we went over to David's parents house (Grammy and Grampa) for a bridal shower for some friends that I was helping to host. Jackson was able to meet his Uncle James and Aunt Megan for the first time. It was such a sweet experience. David and I are so glad that we have so much family that loves him.

The next day it was finally just the 3 of us. We went for our 1st outing alone to the Bluebonnet Festival in Chappell Hill, Texas. The weather was beautiful and Jackson did great. He rode in his stroller and helped me shop. Of course, the one item I went for was not there. (It rained really badly the day before and scared off lots of vendors). We ran into several of our friends from both church and neighbors. It was a blast. Daddy and I felt successful and overall the experience was what we've been dreaming about for years with a child!

Drivin' Solo

Drivin your newborn by yourself in a car is a definite experience. I am sure with subsequent children I won't feel so nervous, but it was tense. You could have heard a pindrop in my car. Jackson, in his usual carefree demeanor, was oblivious. He just sat strapped in and ready. I only drove to my best friend Erin's house (less than a mile), but the trip felt triumphant. :) Once there, Jackson slept the entire time while I learned to be human again and engage in non-baby talk conversations. I originally decided that if I could nurse for the first 2 weeks of Jackson's life I would be satisfied. However, once I experienced nursing with him I was addicted to the bond we share. BUT I, apparently, am fit to be a old-time wet nurse and feed the neighborhood.

So, we had to call in a lactation specialist for consultation. Let's just call her Saint Suzy because she swooped in with some great techniques, answers, and patience. I discovered that no two women are the same with milk, nursing, and babies. I also learned to steer clear of the "norms." Meaning, there is no such thing as the right way to do this. So, the end results are clear: nurse one side, pump the rest. (It reminds me of the Bluebell commercial, "eat all you can, sell the rest.") Ironic huh?

Happy Easter

Easter was a beautiful holiday this year. I had hoped to make it to church with Jackson to celebrate the rising of our Lord, but with the Swine Flu making its way around our area shutting down local campuses, we decided to keep Easter a family affair. We did honor God by explaining the holiday to Jackson (and he understood it all of course). We also went and visiting my mom, his Nemo, along with other family. We are getting really good at traveling with a baby now.

Rubber Ducky!

Okay, nothing is more fun than bath time! I always feel eager for them to happen but then I am suddenly saddened by the reality that my little boy is growing up so fast. Today Jackson lost his umbilical cord while visiting with his Grammy and Grampa along with the other Smith family members. I was definitely concerned, and wanted to "nurse" his little "battle scar." I think I have a lot of learning to do. Poor Jackson..lol. However, the family time was fun. He got to meet uncles, aunts, great uncles and aunts, second cousins, neighbors and friends. We had a great time. And, his Grampa finally got to hold him (because he had a pretty bad cold when he was born).

Our Outdoor Man

We've discovered that Jackson is an outdoor man! Once our little man arrived, we decided that we'd "scrounge up" the moo-lah and order them. (Thanks daddy!) So, today was our big picture day. Jackson did great. He was such a trooper as over 60 pictures were taken in three different outfits. We were thrilled with the way these pictures turned out. David and I just beamed ear to ear with the Aggie ones of course. Class of 2031! Whoop! We hope everyone is enjoying the birth annoucment because we had such a fun time creating the memories with them!

Coming Home!

We were thrilled and scared to know that we were going home! We had to wait until Jackson officially had his first "pee" since the circumcision. The little stinker made us wait almost 26 hours! Talk about stubborn!

It was a scary and surreal moment to think that they just send you home with a baby. I bet the nurses were thinking, "ha, ha...good luck...suckers!" And, just like that we were off into the world with the full responsibility of this little guy. Daddy did the driving; he did a great job and stayed calm. I rode in the back with Jackson. And, as our luck would have it, the day we came home turned out to be one of the coldest days in a long time-50 degrees! So, we all bundled up for our journey. We were greeted by Nemo and Grama and a clean house. It was so kind. And, thus begun the rest of our lives as Mommy and Daddy.

David, Jackson, and I are so thrilled to have visitors! We are super excited that little Jackson can now be in our arms! We have prayed and dreamt of this day for 39 weeks. No one told us that being parents would be so much fun! I had a great delivery (started around 8:30am and he was born at 1:27pm).
